Positive vibes only
I’ve said it time and time again …. positive vibes only! But the truth of the matter is that people can be toxic. You can not control what people say to you or around you, but fortunately you can control who you are around. Quite often, it’s easier to do this when the toxic person is an associate that you’ve kept at arm’s distance anyway. But the discovery that a friend also fits in this category can be harder to swallow. But the hardest pill to swallow … the hardest of them all is when you realize that someone in your family is actually toxic, so much so that you shutter at the thought of being around them, speaking to them, or reading a message that they’ve sent to you.
Unfortunately, I’ve had this experience recently. A note was left for me on social media that just soured my entire mood. Among a few other irrational statements, this person thought it fitting to suggest that I put more effort on my faith instead of “scientific things” like medicine. I don’t feel a need to defend my faith to anyone but this one was just beyond my realm of understanding.
The point of the story is this … I was so upset by what this person said that it sat with me for hours. Words have the ability to change our moods. Sometimes the words are positive, but sometimes not so much. And I don’t need to manage their thoughts or words. I don’t need to convince this person to think as I think or to believe as I believe. I just need to ensure that I don’t give them the ability to intercept my energy.
So I decided to block the person on social media. This was required in this case but “blocking” someone doesn’t necessarily mean blocking them from social media, texting, and calling. Instead, I can block them from my psyche by limiting the amount of time that I spend with them, thinking about their comments or actions, and prioritizing their needs over mine.
I will not feel bad about removing someone who is not contributing to my happiness. I will not feel bad about controlling my mood and energy. I will protect my energy at all costs
I encourage you to do the same.
